Powerball Jackpot Soars to $747 Million for Monday Night’s Drawing

The Powerball jackpot has skyrocketed after no one was able to successfully pick the winning numbers in Saturday night's drawing. The estimated $747 million jackpot is the ninth-largest in U.S. lottery history and the latest in a string of huge lottery prizes.

The Powerball jackpot for Monday night's drawing stands at an estimated $747 million with a cash option of $403.1 million. Powerball is available in 45 states across the United States, as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.[0]

The numbers drawn on Saturday night were 2, 8, 15, 19, 58 and the Powerball 10.[1] The multiplier was set to two[2] Matching five of the five white balls won the second-tier prize of $1 million. Four tickets matched all five white balls and each of those players will win $1 million.

The largest Powerball jackpot of all time was won earlier in November when a lucky player won $2.04 billion in California. An estimate of $747 million has been calculated for a winner who would receive their prize money over a period of 29 years through an annuity.[3] Those who are victorious typically choose to receive money as their prize, which, for Monday night's drawing, is set at $403.1 million.[1]

In Maine, last month, a person won the Mega Millions jackpot of $1.35 billion.[4] That win was followed by a $632.6 million Powerball win in California and Wisconsin in January and a record $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot in California last November.

The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are estimated at 1 in 292.2 million. Despite the low odds, three other players matched four of the five numbers with the Powerball without the multiplier and won $50,000 each.[3] In Powerball, no prizes will be won if only two numbers are matched, unless one of the numbers is the Powerball.[5] If one of the five numbers and the Powerball match a ticket, it is worth $4.[5]

The winner of Monday night's drawing will join the ranks of the lucky few who have won the ninth-largest U.S. lottery jackpot and the fifth-largest Powerball jackpot ever.
