24 Killed in Tragic Bus Accident in Peru

At least 24 people were killed in a tragic accident in Peru on Saturday, when a bus belonging to the company Q'orianka Tours Aguila Dorada, carrying about 60 passengers, plunged off a cliff at a steep section of the road, known as “the devil's curve”.^[0]

The bus had left the capital of Lima for the Tumbes region near the Ecuador border on Peru's coastal desert.^[1] According to Peru's transport supervisory agency (SUTRAN), the accident happened in El Alto, the northern district of Peru.^[2]

Gruesome images of the accident depict the bus overturned with its passengers sprawled on the ground.^[3] Emergency crews rushed to the horror scene in Piura, northwest Peru, to assist the victims.^[3] The El Alto and Mancora hospitals received the injured.^[4]

In Peru, road accidents are quite frequent due to many drivers driving on unsafe roads without adequate instruction.^[5] In 2021, a bus crashed off a highway in the Andes mountains, resulting in the death of 29 people.^[6] In 2016, CBS News reported that over 2,600 fatalities had occurred due to incidents.^[5]

An investigation is being conducted to determine the precise cause of the tragedy.^[1] Police said that most of the passengers on the bus were from Haiti.^[7] Peru is taking steps to increase safety on the roads, with the government having closed the highway to bus traffic after the 2018 crash.
